"One of the best trainings I have ever attended." - Past Participant

According to the 2015-16 CA Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), less than 50% of Contra Costa students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) feel SAFE or VERY SAFE at school, as compared to over 70% of their peers who identify as straight/heterosexual.

Our learning environments must be places where all students feel safe and included and this training focuses on just that.

Here's what participants had to say about this training...

  • "The facilitators were kind, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic."
  • "The statistics and laws are important to know. They validated the need for LGTBQ education at my site!"
  • "Very engaging and relevant."
  • "I liked the broad spectrum of the topics and how to apply the information to our everyday interactions with students. Great resources!"

Presentation Description: This training will provide the opportunity for participants to increase their understanding and skills to create safer, more inclusive classroom environments for young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ).The training will cover three main areas: 1) LGBTQ 101, providing important, foundational information regarding terminology and state law; 2) Health disparities, including increased alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, and 3) Specific strategies and resources available. Due to the cumulative nature of the content for this training, it is important that participants are able to attend for the entire day.

Training Facilitators: This training is facilitated by local experts from the Rainbow Community Center (RCC) of Contra Costa County. RCC is the only organization in Contra Costa County that is solely focused on serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community.
